Services
Effective July 1, 2018 the SSWD will employ staff to carry out the duties of Watermaster. Prior to July, the SSWD contracted with qualified providers to carry-out the duties of District Administrator and Deputy Watermaster.
The SSWD provides year-round court-ordered watermaster service with the bulk of service occurring during the summer irrigation season (March through October). The workload is often heavier during July through October when the temperatures are hotter and the supply of water decreases. Dry water years may require service earlier or later in the season.
WHAT IS COURT-ORDERED WATERMASTER SERVICE?
The purpose of court-ordered watermaster service is to ensure water is allocated according to established water rights as determined by court adjudications, as a condition in a State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) permit or license, or through civil lawsuits. The State established a Watermaster Program in 1924 to provide for general public welfare and safety after many injuries and some deaths resulting from disputes over adjudicated water rights.
